On March 6-8, 2017, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is planning a prescribed burn within Otero County in southern New Mexico. Smoke may be visible, during and possibly for a few days, after the burn is conducted, depending on weather conditions. The prescribed burn is being conducted to reduce the risk of wildfire spreading to public lands and the Mescalero Reservation.
Specifically, the BLM will concentrate its efforts on burning Allotment 00703 - Coyote Canyon West of Bent, New Mexico. In total, 15-20 BLM firefighters and personnel will monitor the prescribed burn.
Prescribed burning is one of the most effective tools to control vegetation in areas where wildfires are no longer appropriate. By reducing the volume of vegetation under the prescribed conditions, land managers mimic the natural fire cycle, which greatly reduces the dangers and risks associated with unplanned wildfires.
