ALTURAS, Calif. - Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management will be burning piles of cut juniper trees within an 800-acre project area south of Alturas beginning Tuesday, March 21, and continuing through Thursday, March 23.
The Westside Project is about eight miles south of Alturas and about five miles east of the Cal Pines community. Smoke will be visible from both communities.
Crews will conduct the project only if weather conditions allow for safe and successful burning.
BLM crews cut the trees in projects to improve habitat conditions in the sagebrush-steppe ecosystem that is important for various wildlife species including greater sage-grouse.
