GUNNISON, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Gunnison Field Office today approved a Special Recreation Permit (SRP) for Silverton Mountain Guides, modifying their guided helicopter skiing (heli-skiing) operations on BLM lands in Silverton, Colorado.
Silverton Mountain Guides proposed a modification that exchanges previous terrain used for backcountry heli-ski operations with other, nearby terrain on BLM lands. The BLM’s decision is based on an environmental assessment, also released today.
“Heli-skiing is a very popular activity in the area that creates a significant boost to the winter economy of Silverton. This decision lets Silverton Mountain Guides fully utilize their allocated user days while having a minimal effect on other backcountry users." said Elijah Waters, Gunnison Field Manager. “It’s a win-win for everyone involved."
Silverton Mountain is one of the largest employers in San Juan County, employing 45 people in the area. Tourism is the dominant industry in San Juan County and accounts for 47 percent of jobs, indirectly contributing to retail, lodging and other services to visitors that come to Silverton. In 2015, recreation activities on BLM-managed lands generated $543 million and supported 4,625 jobs in Colorado.
