ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will be spraying weeds at four recreation sites in the Yakima River Canyon on Tuesday, May 16 and Wednesday, May 17. Planned treatment areas include: Umtanum, Lmuma Creek, Big Pines and Roza recreation sites. Campsites at all of these sites will be closed on these days, but day use will still be permitted in designated portions of the recreation sites.
Manual and chemical control methods will be carried out by BLM employees as well as a local contractor. Chemical control will involve herbicide that will be spot applied to targeted weeds by a Washington State licensed applicator. Herbicides will be mixed with a blue colored dye so treated areas are readily identifiable. All Washington state and federal guidelines will be followed, and project sites will be signed to notify those in the vicinity that herbicide application has taken place.
