Starting on May 23, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Cruces District will begin a two-week improvement project at the Sunset Recreation Area on the west side of Tortugas “A" Mountain. The work to be done will require BLM to close the area to the public from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, the public will be able to access the trails by parking at the Monte Vista trailhead and ramada on the east side of “A" Mountain. Access to the Sunset Recreation Area will be open as usual to the public on weekends, as well as Memorial Day.
The project will include replacing the pipe rail at the Sunset parking lot. In addition, the BLM will resurface and re-contour the road, starting at the intersection of Dripping Springs Road and Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, and the parking lot adjacent to the Sunset trailhead and ramada.
The BLM will be moving the heavy equipment to the site on Monday, May 22 and will begin replacing the pipe rail on May 23. For more information, please contact Mike Williams, BLM lead engineer on the project, at 575-525-4300.
