MORENO VALLEY, Calif. - The Bureau of Land Management Barstow Field Office has scheduled a summer break for the Desert Discovery Center. The center will be closed from August 18-28 and will reopen again on Aug. 29, with programs and activities focused on "Discovering the Desert."
The Desert Discovery Center, originally established in 2000, is comprised of a unique partnership among several government, education, and non-profit organizations. Partners work collaboratively to provide environmental education, contribute funding for facility operations, write grant applications, prepare interpretive displays, create public art, and promote the Desert Discovery Center. Constructed in 1973 and home to the "Old Woman Meteorite," the Desert Discovery Center serves as an environmental education center for the surrounding high-desert communities.
The Desert Discovery Center and the adjacent Desert Discovery Park are located on 12 acres of public land in Barstow, California, in the California Desert National Conservation Area, about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert.
