BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. - The Bureau of Land Management, Tonopah Field Office, is intending to conduct slash pile burning in Nye County around the community of Ione based on the continuation of the previously conducted Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fuels reduction projects. These burns are used to enhancement fuel breaks surrounding the community of Ione and to serve as protection in the event of a wildfire.
Pile burning is expected to occur in mid-January, but may occur anywhere between January and June 1, 2018 and is contingent upon favorable weather conditions. The intent is to dispose of slash piles that were previously generated from thinning activities, which were conducted to protect the community from wildfires. Pile burning will occur between 85 to 100 acres across three separate units. Smoke may be visible at times from Ione, the upper Reese River valley, Berlin and other nearby communities. Ignition operations will be intermittent to allow for adequate smoke dispersal and will likely last several days.
