DOLORES, Colo.- This week, the Bureau of Land Management signed a decision to improve parking and access to the South Sand Canyon trail system in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.
“We want to provide safer, more reliable parking so visitors may continue to access, enjoy and explore this special place," said Marietta Eaton, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument Manager.
The South Sand Canyon trailhead is a popular access point into the monument. Inadequate parking has been an ongoing issue.
The project will increase and delineate parking spaces for passenger vehicles, buses and vehicles with trailers. Also, a parking entrance and exit will be marked.

More than 30,000 visitors a year use the area for recreation. Recreation on BLM-managed public lands in Colorado generated $591 million and supported 4,827 jobs in Fiscal Year 2016.
