FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Artists in Residence Margo Klass and Frank Soos will share their art and experiences from a float trip on Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic River at a public presentation on October 18 at 4 p.m. at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center in Fairbanks. The free event is being held in celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week and the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.
The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which both manage portions of the wild and scenic river, sponsored the two artists’ June 2018 trip. Soos is a former Alaska poet laureate whose interest in fly-fishing conveniently intersects with Klass’s use of fish skins in her mixed-media art. The two artists spent more than a week on the river and experienced rain, snow, sleet, wind and smoke.
The BLM Artist-in-Residence Program is committed to supporting artistic efforts from all mediums that promote opportunities for the use and enjoyment of public lands. Emerging or established artists can participate in nearly any media, including painting, printmaking, photography, writing and music. Artists are expected to donate the use of a piece of their work inspired by their residency to help promote public lands.
