ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. - The Bureau of Land Management High Desert District plans to burn slash piles in the Lousy George Juniper project located 10 miles south of the Currant Creek Ranch, and approximately 65 miles to the south/southwest of Rock Springs. The prescribed fire (pile burn) is scheduled throughout the fall, winter and spring months and is contingent upon fuel moisture, snow ground cover and the weather meeting optimal burn conditions.
This prescribed fire project, targeting a total of 2,100 acres, began in 2015 and is scheduled to be completed in 2020. The upcoming phase targets 100 acres of constructed hand piles.
The purpose is to improve wildlife habitat, increase livestock forage and distribution, enhance rangeland vegetation health, open areas to new grasses and forbs, reduce hazardous fuels and dispose of slash. Burning piles will also reduce existing fuel loads and improve fuel breaks to limit the potential for catastrophic wildfires.
The BLM is committed to keeping public landscapes healthy and productive. As a safety precaution, outdoor enthusiasts are advised to avoid the area listed above during prescribed fire operations.
