WINNEMUCCA, Nev. - On Saturday, Oct. 27, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the new Humboldt River Artwork Exhibit will open at the Humboldt Museum in Winnemucca. The exhibit is a cooperative effort between the Humboldt Museum, the BLM Humboldt Field Office and the Southern Nevada Conservancy.
This permanent metal artwork installation on the back wall of the Humboldt Museum features the work of two talented local metal craftsmen, Benny Martinez and Warren Havens. The exhibit pays tribute to the Humboldt River’s support of life and transportation through time. It features metal silhouette artwork representing Native American hunters and gatherers, mountain men, emigrant wagons, a Central Pacific train, a transcontinental air mail route plane and beacon, vintage vehicles, cowboys and other people, animals and vehicles that have traveled along the Humboldt River.
The nearby Humboldt River Viewing Plaza and Humboldt River Transportation Exhibit overlooking the Humboldt River opened in October 2017. The exhibit features interpretive signage that explains the significance of the Humboldt River as a travel, trade and communication corridor throughout time. The new artwork is the second phase of this project and complements the first phase with its vivid artwork depicting the Humboldt River and its travelers.
To celebrate the official unveiling of this magnificent array of historical artwork, there will be a short presentation at 1 p.m. followed by light refreshments, a door prize drawing and music. The exhibit is hosted by the Humboldt Museum, BLM and Southern Nevada Conservancy.
