CODY, Wyo. -Today the Bureau of Land Management Cody Field Office released the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Leavitt Reservoir Expansion Project near Shell, Wyoming. The proposed project, from the Wyoming Water Development Commission, supports the BLM’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and is consistent with Wyoming’s 2015 Water Strategy.
The proposed expansion is intended to provide late season irrigation and reduce flooding in the area of Shell while increasing recreation opportunities for visitors. Leavitt Reservoir currently has a surface area of approximately 45 acres and a capacity of 643 acre-feet of water. The proposed project would expand the reservoir to 203 acres with a capacity of 6,604 acre-feet or approximately 2.15 billion gallons of water.
The BLM manages public lands for the benefit of current and future generations, and agriculture and recreation are traditional uses that continue to serve local communities throughout the West.
