SILT, Colo. - Today the Bureau of Land Management approved a 2.25-acre right-of-way for the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District to construct and operate a fire station about four miles southwest of Basalt on West Sopris Creek Road.
The station is needed to better serve the growing area, and suitable sites to build the station are limited. The new fire station will have two bays, one for a fire vehicle and one for a medical response vehicle.
“The Fire District is an important partner to the BLM and U.S. Forest Service in managing wildfires, and this station’s proximity to public land will help with prompt responses to wildfires," said Larry Sandoval, Field Manager for the Colorado River Valley Field Office. “The BLM strives to be a good neighbor and can authorize such uses of public land to local governments when it’s in the public’s interest."
Construction is anticipated to begin late spring or early summer.
