The following press releases was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management on May 15, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

DOLORES, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is hosting an art and archaeology exhibition at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum. Students from the Southwest Open School in Cortez will exhibit their archaeologically inspired artistic creations for two weeks starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

Throughout the month of May, Southwest Open School students are learning about cultural resource management and Ancestral Puebloan culture, including architecture, technology and art of southwestern Colorado. The students are producing three-dimensional and two-dimensional art pieces inspired by archaeological sites, documents, and artifacts from the region. The exhibition is a result of an ongoing partnership between Southwest Open School, BLM’s Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, and Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance.

Southwest Open School is an alternative education public charter high school that provides experiential education for students of Montezuma County.

Visit the BLM's Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum at 27501 Highway 184 in Dolores, May 28 through June 14, to view the exhibition. Contact Ed Whritner, Humanities Teacher for Southwest Open School, at 970-565-1150 for questions about the school, class, or exhibition.
