Canyon Lands Fire Reported West of Cañon City

CAÑON CITY, Colo. - Firefighters from the Front Range Fire and Aviation Management Unit, along with local agencies, is working to suppress the Canyon Lands Fire in Fremont County, Colorado.

The fire is currently ½ acre in size, burning 9 miles northwest of Cañon City, CO on BLM-Royal Gorge Field Office Lands. The Canyon Lands Fire is located in very rugged and isolated country north of the Arkansas River. The fire was first reported at 3:13 p.m. on July 9.

A 5-person hand crew and a type 3 helicopter are assigned. No structures are threatened.

Cause: Lightning

Location: 9 miles NW of Cañon City, CO; east flank of Table Mountain

Size: Estimated ½ acre

Containment: 0%

Jurisdiction: Bureau of Land Management

Fuels: Gamble Oak, Spruce, Fir

Resources: One 5 person hand crew; one Type 3 helicopter

Road Closures: None

Current Actions: Provide for firefighter and public safety, size up the fire, and develop a suppression strategy for the coming operational periods.
