CARLSBAD, N.M. - The Bureau of Land Management Carlsbad Field Office is seeking volunteers for its upcoming National Public Lands Day event on Sept. 27 & 28. In recognition of this annual observance, the BLM will conduct a variety of maintenance work on BLM land located along the Black River.
In concert with other events around the country, the BLM is encouraging the public to join BLM staff in making a difference for public land resources they use and value. Volunteers will perform work on the Black River filling burlap bags with mulch. The bags will be placed along headcuts to stabilize erosion areas. In addition, volunteers will help with planting trees, repairing chain link fence and installing irrigation pipeline. Volunteers will also help construct shade shelters over existing picnic tables at the Cottonwood Day Use location and clean-up litter along the river and surrounding areas.
Those interested should meet at 8 a.m. at a designated staging area where BLM staff will break participants into groups. To get to this location, take Highway 62/180 toward Washington Ranch Road (approximately 20 miles from Carlsbad), turn right on Washington Ranch Road, turn right at the first cattle guard and head north. The road will dead-end at the staging location.
