CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Land Management, Sierra Front Field Office has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze the impacts of doing prescribed burns, cutting back flammable vegetation, or both on up to 1,154 acres in 24 strategically located treatment units in Alpine County, California. This project proposes to alter vegetation structure and function and lower fire danger while increasing the long-term vegetative health of the treatment areas. The 14-day public comment period begins April 17 and will end on May 4, 2020.
Protection of private property, natural resources and recreation values guide management actions on BLM lands in the County. Small communities, isolated residences, developed recreation sites and other improvements are adjacent to most treatment units. Periodic large wildfires in this fire-prone landscape are considered inevitable and the County has a history of large intense and sometimes destructive fires.
During the 14-day public comment period, the BLM welcomes comments, data or information related to potential issues, impacts and alternatives that should be addressed in the EA.
