TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Today, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Jarbidge Field Office, Twin Falls District released 11 wild horses (six studs, five mares) to the Saylor Creek Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA), 15 miles south of Glenns Ferry.
Earlier this year, the Jarbidge Field Office conducted a water/bait trap gather of the Saylor Creek HMA wild horse herd to reduce the overpopulation on the range, capturing 104 horses. Many of these horses will be offered for adoption later.
This release will bring the Saylor Creek wild horse population to its Appropriate Management Level of 50. The mares to be released have been treated with the fertility control vaccine GonaCon Equine, one of the vaccines the BLM uses in its management of wild horses on the range. It can cause high rates of contraception that can last two to five years.
