ARCATA, Calif. - Today through Friday, March 19, the Bureau of Land Management fire crews will be burning piles of brush and small trees in the Lacks Creek Management Area northeast of Arcata. Smoke will be visible from recreation sites within the Lacks Creek area and from homes along Blair and Stover roads, about three miles north of State Route 299.
This project reduces brush and small trees, within a 50-acre area, previously cut and piled by BLM staff to improve habitat, forest health and reduce the potential and severity of wildland fires. Fire crews hope to cover 10 acres a day following the burn plan that specifies allowable weather, fuel moisture conditions, and staff and equipment requirements.
The 8,600-acre Lacks Creek Management Area is about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in the Coast Range. It features trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding and secluded campsites. Information and driving directions are available at www.blm.gov/visit/lacks-creek-management-area.
