Western Montana BLM lands going to Stage II fire restrictions

(BUTTE, Mont.) - Stage II fire restrictions will go into effect for most lands administered by the Bureau of Land of Land Management in the agency’s Western Montana District, starting Thursday, July 22.

The order applies to all BLM lands in the following counties: Beaverhead, Madison, Silver Bow, Deer Lodge, Powell (south of Interstate 90 and Montana Highway 12) and Granite (south of Interstate 90 and east of the Lolo National Forest boundary).

The order prohibits the following:

* Building maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire.

* Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.

* Operating motorized vehicles off designated roads and trails, as defined in approved agency travel plan.

In addition, the following acts are prohibited from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.:

* Operating any internal combustion engine.

* Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame.

* Using an explosive.
