ELKO, Nev. - Lightning occurred across the Elko District yesterday causing multiple fires. The storm was forecast and extra resources were mobilized to support initial attack on Saturday. Fire crews responded to six fires, four on BLM managed lands and two on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Rain from yesterday afternoon and last night temporarily reduced the potential of more fires.
Fires and containment:
Elbow- 212 acres, full containment estimated end of shift 8/1
Jay- Single tree, fully contained
Triple- 13 acres, fully contained
Big Butte- 5 acres, fully contained
Bear Creek and Lee (Humboldt-Toiyabe NF)- 28 and 1 acres respectively
Fire crews have responded to about 50 fires this year with an estimated 2500 acres burned.
“With the weather and the resources on our district we have had great success responding to fires and keeping them small," Craig Cunningham, Assistant Fire Management Officer said. “Our cooperating agencies have been supportive as well, and we plan to continue to be aggressive in our initial attack response."
