Carson City, Nev. - Weather conditions permitting, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District is scheduled on or about Thurs, Jan. 6, 2022, to begin burning slash piles generated from a 11-acre fuels reduction project off Foothill Road near Faye-Luther Trailhead in Alpine County, CA. A second burn may occur after if weather permits, to burn piles generated from a 3-acre fuels reduction project in the Virginia Highlands near Graves Road in Storey County, NV.
The burns are planned in an area where brush and trees have recently been thinned to reduce accumulations of fuels that can threaten homes and other buildings during a wildfire. “In the event of a wildfire, reducing the fuel leads to less intense fires in the treated area that firefighters have a higher probability of containing.," said Carson City District Fire Management Officer Jonathan Palma.
The projects are part of an ongoing effort by the BLM to restore healthy, diverse, and resilient ecosystems to conditions that minimize the potential for uncharacteristically intense fires. By reducing the potential fire behavior, the wildland fire risk to firefighters and the public is reduced.
Smoke may be noticeable in these two areas during ignition.
