Reclamation seeks public comment on Horsetooth Reservoir’s South Bay Campground communication tower

The Bureau of Reclamation, Eastern Colorado Area Office (ECAO) is seeking public input on a request received from Crown Castle USA Inc. to replace an existing 36-foot communication tower with a 50-foot steel tower within South Bay Campground at Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins to improve existing cellular coverage in the vicinity and support additional wireless carriers. The wireless communications tower has not been altered or updated since originally permitted by Larimer County in 1999.

Comments are appreciated in the evaluation of the proposal to determine the effects of increasing the size of the wireless tower. If significant issues are identified, Reclamation will consider the preparation of an Environmental Assessment in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

Written comments, suggestions, and concerns will be accepted until September 30, 2022, using one of the two acceptable methods:

Horsetooth Reservoir is part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, which spreads over approximately 250 miles in the State of Colorado. The Project stores, regulates, and diverts water from the Colorado River on the western slope of the Continental Divide to the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. It provides supplemental water for irrigation of about 615,000 acres of land and municipal and industrial and recreational water more than 1 million residents in Northeastern Colorado. The Project generates enough electricity to power nearly 68,000 households each year.
