The Ways and Means Committee handled H.R.8800, H.R.8805, H.R.8812 bills on Sept. 13, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.8800 titled “To amend title XVIII of the Social Security Act to extend certain increases in payments for physicians services under the Medicare program through 2023” was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce and in addition to the Committee on Ways and Means for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ami Bera with Larry Bucshon as cosponsor.

Bill H.R.8805 titled “To amend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act with respect to nursing facility requirements, and for other purposes” was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce and in addition to the Committee on Ways and Means for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Gerald Connolly with Ron Estes as cosponsor.

Bill H.R.8812 titled “To amend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act and the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 to increase access to services provided by advanced practice registered nurses under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and for other purposes” was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce and in addition to the Committee on Ways and Means for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard with Earl Blumenauer, David Joyce, Adrian Smith as cosponsors.

The Ways and Means Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
