Blinken: Fellowship gives best tech minds 'a pathway into public service'

Secretary of State Antony Blinken used a YouTube video to inform the public that the 2023 Foreign Affairs IT Fellowship Program is now accepting applications.

The best up-and-coming tech minds will find this is a unique opportunity to work their way into public service in support of modern U.S. diplomacy, according to the FAIT website.

“The FIAT fellowship is the State Department’s way of giving some of the best up-and-coming minds from tech a pathway into public service, so they can help us tackle the most urgent issues of our time – from combating COVID, to preventing conflicts, to addressing the climate crisis,” Blinken said in the video.

Fellows accepted into the program will receive two years of financial assistance which can be used toward graduate or undergraduate studies as well as two internships with stipend support, professional development and mentorship. The FIAT website said they are looking for applicants who are seeking to use their tech skills “to make a difference, see the world and experience different cultures.”

Fellows receive up to $87,000 in funding from the State Department for the duration of the two-year program, according to Yahoo Finance. Applications will be accepted Sept. 12-Feb. 3, 2023. Fellows who are selected for the program will begin the two-year fellowship in the fall of 2023 and will complete the program in the summer of 2025. The program has had 57 fellows participate to date.

The State Department partnered with the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars in carrying out the program, according to Yahoo Finance. This year's fellowship will mark the seventh year of the partnership. Apply at FAITFellowship.org.
