Today, USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman attended the G20 Development Ministerial in Belitung, Indonesia. She provided updates on US development priorities and offered ideas on collaboration during the two Ministerial sessions: Advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Achievements through Strengthening Resilience Against Future Crises and Promoting Innovative Financing Mechanism and Reinvigorating Global Commitment to Multilateralism for Timely Delivery of SDGs Achievements.
During the Ministerial, Deputy Administrator Coleman shared USAID’s view that the world’s future prosperity relies on our collective ability to create an inclusive and sustainable foundation for recovery and growth. She shared how the United States and specifically USAID can help advance the Sustainable Development Goals. The Deputy Administrator also highlighted private sector engagement as critical to helping markets develop in ways that drive economic growth, and also safeguard the environment and make progress toward achieving the SDGs. She shared how USAID is catalyzing capital from public, philanthropic, and other sources to encourage members of the private sector to invest in activities and projects that can both achieve financial returns and impact development efforts. Deputy Administrator Coleman reiterated the commitment of the United States to advancing peaceful, just, and inclusive societies and called on other G20 member states to do the same.
Deputy Administrator Coleman also met with leadership from Indonesia and Saudi Arabia on the sidelines of the G20. In her meeting with Dr. Suharso Monoarfa, Minister of National Development Planning for Indonesia, the Deputy Administrator highlighted the Biden-Harris Administration’s priorities in the Indo-Pacific region, including tackling the climate crisis and deepening the U.S.-Indonesia strategic partnership by advancing shared development priorities. Deputy Administrator Coleman acknowledged USAID’s long standing partnership with Indonesia and encouraged Indonesia to join the USAID-supported Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
In conversation with His Excellency Faisal bin Fadhil Al-Ibrahim, Minister of Economy and Planning of Saudi Arabia, Deputy Administrator Coleman recognized the recent humanitarian assistance commitments Saudi Arabia made to Yemen and to the Famine Relief Fund, and encouraged continued support, especially for the Horn of Africa and drought humanitarian response efforts. Deputy Administrator Coleman and Al-Ibrahim also discussed a shared desire to strengthen our donor partnership on international development.
During her formal G20 remarks and in her bilateral meetings, Deputy Administrator Coleman reiterated that the United States will continue to hold the Russian Federation to account for its unprovoked and unjust war against Ukraine. She expressed the need for continuous engagement with G20 and other international partners to address the immense challenges stemming from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, especially the damaging effects on global food security and energy security.
