Visit the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center on September 17 for a special program by local writer and historian Tom Rea. At 11 a.m., Rea will present “Native People, Independence Rock, and Devil’s Gate.”
Drawing from Euro-American and traditional tribal sources, Rea will recount human events and encounters around Independence Rock and Devil’s Gate from earliest times to the present. Too often, these places are remembered only as landmarks for white emigrants and pioneers. Rea’s presentation discusses the history of these places and their importance to the people that called the area home prior to European settlement.
Rea is historian, writer, and the editor and co-founder of the state history website WyoHistory.org. His books include “Devil’s Gate: Owning the Land, Owning the Story,” “The Hole in the Wall Ranch: A History” and “Bone Wars: The Excavation and Celebrity of Andrew Carnegie’s Dinosaur.” He is also the president of the Wyoming chapter of the Oregon-California Trails Association, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary here in Casper.
