The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee handled S.Res.771, S.Res.772 bills on Sept. 19, according to the US Congress.

Bill S.Res.771 titled “A resolution supporting the designation of September 19, 2022, as National Stillbirth Prevention Day

recognizing tens of thousands of American families that have endured a stillbirth, and seizing the opportunity to keep other families from experiencing the same tragedy”. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Jeff Merkley with Cory Booker, Charles Grassley, Angus King, Gary Peters, Ron Wyden as cosponsors.

Bill S.Res.772 titled “A resolution recognizing the seriousness of myotonic dystrophy and expressing support for the designation of September 15, 2022, as International Myotonic Dystrophy Awareness Day”. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine with Amy Klobuchar, Cynthia Lummis, Tina Smith as cosponsors.

The Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
