Quick action was taken by the Biden administration in issuing an emergency declaration and providing federal assistance for Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona, according to Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves.

Life-threatening flooding and a complete lack of power across the archipelago were caused by the hurricane, according to a Sept. 19 Commerce Department news release.

“Hurricane Maria wrought devastation upon Puerto Rico five years ago. As we approach this solemn anniversary, Puerto Rico is once again sustaining severe weather, this time from Hurricane Fiona,” Graves said in the release.

Graves said when he met with Gov. Pierluisi, local community leaders and business leaders last month in San Juan, he saw the "tenacious resilience" of Puerto Rico, the release reported. His visit was to discuss how the Biden administration was making a commitment to economic recovery and development a priority.

He and Pierluisi have been in contact during the crisis. This is something he plans to do as he monitors the situation on the island, the release reported.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to the people of Puerto Rico and will continue to work with Puerto Rico’s government and institutions on this road to recovery,” Graves said, according to the release.
