How politicians on Energy and Natural Resources Committee dealt with bills on Sept. 21

The Energy and Natural Resources Committee handled H.R.4009, H.R.4358, S.4904 bills on Sept. 21, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.4009 titled “Enslaved Voyages Memorial Act” was received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources by the Senate. The bill is sponsored by Del. Holmes Norton Eleanor. Federal funds may not be used to pay any expense of the establishment of the commemorative work.

Bill H.R.4358 titled “Little Manatee Wild and Scenic River Act” was received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources by the Senate. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Vern Buchanan. The bill withdraws the federal land within the boundaries of the designated river segment from (1) entry, appropriation, or disposal under the public land laws; (2) location, entry, and patent under the mining laws; and (3) disposition under all laws relating to mineral and geothermal leasing or mineral materials.

Bill S.4904 titled “A bill to address the forest health crisis on the National Forest System and public lands, and for other purposes” was read twice and referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources by the Senate. The bill is sponsored by Sen. John Barrasso with Joseph Manchin as cosponsor.

The Energy and Natural Resources Committee moves forward in some way on one bill per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
