Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield Announces $3 Million Contribution to the UN Basket Fund for Haiti

Today in New York, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced a $3 million contribution by the United States to the Joint Program for the Haitian National Police. Also known as the UN Basket Fund for Haiti, this multi-donor fund, managed by the United Nations Development Program in coordination with the Haitian National Police (HNP), UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), and other stakeholders, provides an opportunity for all partner nations to contribute to the restoration of security in Haiti.
At an event co-hosted with Canada and the United Nations on the margins of the 77th UN General Assembly High-Level Week, Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended the UN for its management of the fund and urged all Member States to make serious contributions to the fund to help turn the tide of Haiti’s dire security environment.
The United States has provided $48 million in assistance directly to Haiti in the past year alone and has also provided emergency supplies to help the HNP maintain its operations in the face of violent unrest. The United States is continuing to advance programs to strengthen the HNP’s capacity to counter gangs by providing training, equipment, and security assistance.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield urged those in attendance to redouble their efforts to ensure that Haiti can provide its citizens with the security they deserve.
