Marquette County Corridor Plan Approved by NPS

Marquette County Corridor Plan Approved by NPS

The National Park Service (NPS) has designated a corridor, averaging 2-5 miles wide, within Marquette County which may someday contain the Ice Age National Scenic Trail (NST). The corridor incorporates some of the best glacial features and support facilities for hikers. The designation of this corridor allows flexibility when determining the final route of the Ice Age NST in Marquette County. The determination of the route of the Ice Age NST is entirely dependent on willing landowners. The eventual completion of the Ice Age NST will add 45-55 miles of Ice Age NST. This trail would be constructed from the Waushara/Adams County line to French Creek State Wildlife Area and the Columbia County line. Today, approximately 1.8 miles of the Ice Age NST has been constructed in Marquette County and is located at John Muir County Park (Boyhood home of renowned conservationist) where it winds around Ennis Lake.

NPS and its partners, the Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA) and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) hope to acquire an approximately 50 to 1,000 foot-wide trailway from willing landowners within the corridor. In some areas, more land may be desired to preserve outstanding resource features or to accommodate the wishes of the landowner. This width of trail way provides for a high-quality hiking experience for the public while maintaining a buffer for neighboring landowners.
