The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates several lake projects in Central Texas. These projects offer a variety of outdoor and water-based recreation opportunities. One outdoor activity, metal detecting at Belton Lake, was featured in a local media story recently. The use of metal detectors is permitted on USACE property with restrictions.
For the protection of archaeological and historical resources, the USACE restricts metal detecting activities at Belton Lake to the designated swim beaches at Temple’s Lake and Westcliff Parks. The use of metal detectors outside of these areas is a citable offense under Title 36 Part 327.14(d).
Additionally, any item with a nominal value over $25 found, through the use of metal detectors or otherwise, shall be turned into a Park Ranger or to the Belton Lake Office. Removal of these items is a citable offense under Title 36 Part 327.14(a).
