The Governmental Accountability Office outlined the fiscal 2022 appropriations for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to spend $859.3 million for 491 projects.
According to the GAO Sept. 29 report, Congress could request the designation of federal funding for specific projects in their communities. Congress directs agencies to distribute the funds to specific recipients, and GAO is tracking those funds to increase transparency.
"The intended uses of these funds are primarily to support improvements to drinking water and wastewater systems," the GAO report said. "Projects include the construction, repair and replacement of drinking water, wastewater and sewage systems."
GAO noted the recipients of the funds are mostly Tribal, state, territorial and local governments, as well as higher education and other nonprofit organizations. According to the report, funding ranged from $50,000 to more than $22 million.
"We're also tracking these funds across government and at 17 other agencies," the GAO report stated.
