Abbotts Bridge Reopened 10/29/03

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Oct. 29, 2003. It is reproduced in full below.

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area has reopened the Abbotts Bridge Unit, as of Oct. 24, 2003. Abbotts was closed on May 19, 2003 due to a bridge failure. Heavy rainstorms caused a tributary stream of the Chattahoochee River to overflow and undercut the entrance roadway. The serious erosion undercut two stream culverts, which caused the roadway to collapse.

The Federal Highway Administration worked with the park to restore access to the area as quickly as possible.
