The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 22, 2005. It is reproduced in full below.

At 5:20 a.m. this morning, a 54" water main located within park boundaries at Cochran Shoals broke causing a 25' x 25' hole with up to 500,000 gallons of water released onto the park grounds. Cobb County - Marietta Water Authority has brought in heavy equipment to repair the water main break.

Until the water receeds, the true extent of the damage will not be known.

At this time, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Cochran Shoals unit will be closed at Interstate North until further notice. Park visitors may continue to access the park at the Columns Drive entrance.
