Friends of Olympic National Park Announce Guided Wildflower Walk

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on July 19, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

The Friends of Olympic National Park (FONP) are planning a special members-only wildflower walk to Hurricane Hill on Thursday, July 20. Members of FONP (new and old) wishing to join the walk should meet at the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, July 20.

Hurricane Ridge Resource Educator Janis Burger, a long-time park employee and area naturalist, will guide the walk.

“We’re happy to announce another unique event for FONP members," said FONP President Ted Mattie. “The opportunity to observe wildflowers and learn more about them from an expert like Janis Burger is well worth the price of membership by itself."

People wishing to join FONP can visit their website at http://www.friendsonp.org and click on the “Membership" link. The annual membership fee is $20 for individuals, $25 for families and $10 for students and current members of the armed services. To sign up for the walk, people should visit the FONP website and click on “Events".

The walk is about three miles round trip along the Hurricane Hill trail. Participants should wear comfortable layered clothing and sturdy walking shoes and bring a hat, raingear and a flashlight. The guided walk will last from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; the sun will set at approximately 9:00 p.m.

Entrance fees are collected at Heart o’the Hills, on the way to Hurricane Ridge; Olympic’s seven-day entrance pass is $15; an Olympic National Park Annual Pass (good for one year after date of purchase) is $30.
