The National Park Service is restricting open campfires in portions of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and adjacent North Cascades National Park. Effective Friday, Aug. 11, campfires are banned in all campgrounds and picnic areas (as follows) in the Stehekin Valley and along the NPS-managed portion of the Lake Chelan shore:

Tumwater
High Bridge
Harlequin
Bullion
Rainbow Bridge
Rainbow Falls
Purple Point Campground, overflow & picnic area

This restriction means that no campfires (using wood, briquettes, or any other fuel; in the fire pits provided or in any kind of fire pan or barbecue grill or other device) are permitted until further notice. This closure parallels a widespread ban on campfires in the lower portion of Lake Chelan in the Wenatchee National Forest.
In the remainder of Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, North Cascades National Park, and Ross Lake National Recreation Area, open fires are permitted as usual: in established fire pits in both designated campgrounds in the frontcountry and designated campsites in the backcountry. Open fires are not permitted in other areas. Visitors are urged to exercise great caution with all fire. Do not burn toilet paper. Do not discard cigarettes.
