National Park Service RoadAR 47, (commonly referred to as the Placer Cove Road and/or the Eldorado Canyon/Nelson Road) has been temporarily closed at the turnoff from the Nelson Access Road. The temporary closure is necessary due to the damage sustained in yesterday’s flash flooding. We are estimating that two inches of rain fell in less than one hour.
At this time, a schedule for repairing and re-opening the road has not been finalized. Currently, Lake Mead NRA Rangers and Maintenance Crews are assessing the damage. Updates will be sent when new information is available.
This access area, Placer Cove, on the Nevada side of Lake Mohave is a very popular weekend destination for Southern Nevadans. Visitors can still access the Nevada side of Lake Mohave by taking the Cottonwood Cove Access Road to the Cottonwood Cove developed area of Lake Mohave. This area has a launch ramp, marina, boat rentals a store, restaurant, dry storage, and an RV Park.
National Park Service Rangers want to remind visitors to be safe and stay out of washes and low-lying road areas during rain storms. Rangers caution all visitors that the rain from storms miles away from your location can still cause flash floods. It is always a good idea to check the weather forecast before you visit the park -- especially in monsoon season (August/September).
