Artist-in-Residence Program Resumes at Whiskeytown

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 6, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is pleased to resume its Artist-In-Residence Program after a three-year break. Following a long tradition of artists drawing inspiration from National Parks, Whiskeytown will again seek applications from artists wishing to come and stay for a two-week period at the park.

Co-sponsored by the Friends of Whiskeytown and the National Park Service, the residency is open to artists working in a variety of mediums. Professional two-dimensional visual artists, photographers, sculptors, writers, composers, and crafts artists are encouraged to apply. During their stay the artist will be asked to give a public demonstration or workshop and also be asked to donate a piece of their artwork.

In 2003 Catherine Jennings, an artist and instructor at Chico State, was Whiskeytown’s first resident artist. This year’s participant is Mel Jackson, a California College of Arts and Crafts graduate and Shasta County resident. Whiskeytown is one of only thirty other National Parks offering this exciting program.

Applications for the 2007 Artist-in-Residence Program are now being accepted. To learn contact the Artist-in-Residence Coordinator at P.O. Box 188, Whiskeytown, CA 96095 or email your request to: Whiskeytown.Art@gmail.com. Two to four artists will be selected in 2007. The deadline date for applications is January 15th 2007.
