Decrease in Visitation for August 2006

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 15, 2006. It is reproduced in full below.

Petrified Forest, AZ - Park Superintendent Lee Baiza announced that visitation decreased 14% this August from last year with 64,930 visits compared to last year’s 75,807. The year-to-date total is 437,250 which is down by 3% from last year.

The Arizona monsoon season is usually over by September but late rains have produced a spectacular fall wildflower display. Yellow flowers are the most prominent such as wild buckwheat, snakeweed, and camphorweed. The orange globe mallows line the road in many places.
