Seneca Falls - Women’s Rights National Historical Park Superintendent Tina Orcutt announced today that the park will unveil a temporary exhibit on the 1856 National Women’s Rights Convention, which was held in New York City, in the park’s visitor center on Nov. 25, 2006. "Women’s Rights National Historical Park is proud to offer this special exhibit on the struggles of the movement begun in Seneca Falls in 1848, during the turbulent year of 1856," said Orcutt.
1856 was a watershed year that saw Civil War in Kansas, a presidential election, and a focus on slavery. Despite these distractions the national leadership of the Women’s Rights movement was determined to place their cause before a national audience.
The exhibit will highlight the significance of the convention as well as the key leaders of the Women’s Rights movement of 1856, many of whom had connections to the First Women’s Rights convention in 1848.
