SENECA FALLS, NY - The final event in the HUNT FOR THE HUNTS, a year long research project including workshops, tours, concerts and exhibits about the life, family, home and activities of Richard P. Hunt, Waterloo developer, takes place during an open house on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, 2 to 4 p.m., at the Hunt House, 401 E. Main Street, Waterloo.
Part of the continuing investigation included removing modern renovations to the Hunt House. “Original architectural features have been discovered behind bathroom walls," said Vivien Rose, Chief of Cultural Resources at Women’s Rights NHP. “When compared with inventories taken after Richard Hunt’s death, these discoveries help us understand the historic house." Newly-revealed shadows of walls and doorways will be visible during the open house, with a short presentation about the findings of the project at 2:30 p.m.
Included in the presentation will be archival information about the next generation of the Hunt family. Tanya Warren, curator at the Waterloo Library and Historical Society, will briefly discuss papers donated to the Waterloo Library and Historical Society by Mary Hunt, Richard P. and Sarah M’Clintock Hunt’s daughter. As a grown woman, Mary Hunt cared for Judge S. Hadley while living in the house formerly occupied by the M’Clintock family. Warren will show examples from the collection which show how the Hunt family spread across the country and away from its Quaker roots.
The HUNT FOR THE HUNTS project has been a joint undertaking of the Waterloo Library and Historical Society, the Seneca County Historian’s Office, and Women’s Rights National Historical Park.
