This winter’s abundant snowfall has created conditions allowing for the increased use of snowmobiles in and around the West Branch area. Operators of snowmobiles are reminded that they are permitted to use the shoulder of the paved surface of Parkside Drive between Main Street and Interstate Highway 80 to access areas south of town, or come into town. This is the only designated route that snowmobiles can operate on within the National Historic Site boundary. “We are pleased to be able to allow snowmobiles to operate along the edge of Parkside Drive so these winter recreation users can enjoy their sport. We ask that they respect the National Historic Site grounds, and not operate their machines outside the designated route", said Superintendent Cheryl A. Schreier.
Rangers have documented twelve violations since Jan. 1, 2008 of snowmobiles operating outside the designated route. Seven of the violations occurred in the open area east of Parkside Drive south of Cedar Street, and five violations occurred in the Village Green. The newly updated fine for operating outside the designated snowmobile route is a minimum of $100.00.
Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are in West Branch, Iowa at exit 254 of I-80. Admission will be free from 5 p.m. on Friday through 5 p.m. on Sunday. Parking is limited so please allow extra time to find a parking space.
