Seeking Spring Volunteers at Lowell National Historical Park
Lowell National Historical Park is seeking volunteers to assist with a variety of seasonal operations, programs, and events. Consider the array of opportunities to become engaged at Lowell’s national park - one of 391 areas of the National Park Service throughout the country:
• Trolley volunteers are needed for start-up and training in March. Can you give at least one half-day per week to help operate the park trolleys?
• Volunteer Museum Teacher Aides are needed for the Tsongas Industrial History Center. Volunteers must have at least an associate’s degree, be good working with children, and be able to work a 9:30-1:30 schedule at least one day per week.
• Those who know Lowell well and love to talk with visitors and learn about Lowell history should consider volunteering as Interpretive Park Rangers. You need to be able to work a regular schedule, ideally at least a 4-hour shift on one day per week.
• Interns and work-study college students are needed to assist with visitor interpretive programs and exhibit sites.
• Join the park and our partners Lowell Canalwaters Cleaners and Keep Lowell Beautiful to help with the canal and city clean-ups for this spring. We are planning a major Earth Day canal clean-up and festival on April 26 and the Great American city-wide clean-up on May 3. • With the spring thaw, volunteers can help as Stewards along the Canalway and the Riverwalk. They will help us monitor and take care of these important public spaces and walkways, as well as being “roving ambassadors" for the city and the park. We would like each volunteer to agree to cover the assigned walkway on one scheduled day each week.
• We are also seeking Adopt-a-Canalway/Riverwalk and Gatehouse volunteers and groups to provide a deeper level of stewardship. The walkway segment adoption volunteers will help with beautifying the grounds, everything from cleaning up winter debris to plantings of flowers. The gatehouse volunteers will clean up the interiors, beautify the exteriors, and open the historic structures for public viewing at least one day per week.
