Fire danger at Point Reyes National Seashore is rated as "Extreme" again today, Friday, August 29. Restrictions that will continue to be in effect today within the Seashore boundaries are:
1) all wood or charcoal fires will be banned, although self-contained gas stoves will be permitted at designated campgrounds and picnic areas;
2) all previously issued fire permits will become null and void;
3) Mt. Vision Road will be closed to all vehicle traffic;
4) smoking will be prohibited on all park trails and backcountry areas; and
5) park employees will not use electrical equipment such as chain saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, welders or other potential ignition sources outside of developed areas in the park.
The Red Flag Warning issued earlier this week by the National Weather Service for the North Bay Hills weather zone will also continue to be in effect until 8:00 p.m. tonight. The Red Flag Warning does not apply to the Coastal North Bay weather zone which the Seashore is included in, however it does apply to Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods National Monument.
Onshore winds later today are expected to bring moister air and decrease the fire danger at the Seashore for the Labor Day Weekend. The fire danger rating is a daily decision which is based on the previous day’s weather and vegetation conditions.
