Update on NPS Openings

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Sept. 6, 2008. It is reproduced in full below.

As of 5:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, all areas in the national park units of the Outer Banks Group have been assessed for possible storm damage. National Park Service staff completed on-the-ground assessments of the status of facilities and beaches to determine when normal operations can be restored.

Ocracoke Visitor Center will open at 9:00 a.m.; Ocracoke Campground will open at 12: noon and the reservation system will be in place. The beaches will remain closed to ORV access until conditions are safe for travel.

Hatteras Visitor Center and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will open at 9:00 a.m.; Frisco Campground will open at 12: noon and the Cape Point Campground remains closed for the season. The beaches will remain closed to ORV access until conditions are safe for travel.

Bodie Island Visitor Center will open at 9:00 a.m.; Oregon Inlet Campground will open at 12: noon. The beaches will remain closed to ORV access until conditions are safe for travel.

Wright Brothers National Memorial Visitor Center will open have a delayed opening but will open by 12: noon.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site Visitor Center will open at 9:00 a.m.

All employees normally scheduled to work on Sunday, September 7, 2008 will report to work. The clean-up process will be on-going due to standing water, minor flooding and tree limb debris. All park beaches are open to pedestrian but will remain closed to ORV access until conditions are safe for travel.
