The General Management Plan (GMP) for Sagamore Hill National Historic Site has been approved and finalized and a Presentation Edition is now being distributed to the public. The GMP was developed with the participation of staff, volunteers, neighbors, partners, community leaders and government agencies who worked to create a vision for the future of the site. The GMP outlines the course of action for future management of the site that creates an enhanced context for conveying the story of Theodore Roosevelt and his beloved home and family.
The plan calls for construction of a new maintenance building, the adaptive reuse of the New Barn for a Visitor Orientation Center, and an addition to the Old Orchard Building for program space and museum storage. A major goal of the plan is to preserve and restore the site’s landscape and buildings to provide the visitor with a greater sense of the agricultural character of the property, as it was a “working farm" when the Roosevelts lived there.
The Presentation Edition will be sent to more than seven hundred people who participated in the development of the GMP or who have been actively involved in other aspects of the park’s management and history. Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, located at 12 Sagamore Hill Road, Oyster Bay, New York, is a unit of the National Park System. The site was established by Congress in 1962 to preserve and interpret the structures, landscape, collections and other cultural resources associated with Theodore Roosevelt’s home in Oyster Bay, New York, to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the life and legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, his family and the significant events associated with him.
Sagamore Hill is the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. The grounds are open year round from dawn to dusk. Building hours are Wednesday through Sunday and tours are offered from 10-4; admission is $5 for adults; 15 and under, free.
