Vehicle Removal from Red Canyon Scheduled for

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Jan. 28, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

On Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 the east entrance road of Colorado National Monument (Rim Rock Drive) will be temporarily closed between 6:00 am - 7:00 am to allow a 240 ton crane to travel from the East Entrance Gate, up the east hill and on to Red Canyon to remove the vehicle which went off the road on January 21. Traffic between the East Entrance Gate and the DS Road turn off will be held for approximately 60 minutes while the crane is in route to the removal site.

Glade Park residents are advised to use Little Park Road for morning commutes on Thursday and again Thursday afternoon to avoid these traffic delays.

Rim Rock Drive beyond the DS Road turn off to 16 ½ Road will be closed from 6:00 am until the crane leaves the park late in the afternoon. The crane will take up both lanes. Cars and bicycles will not be permitted in this section of closed road.

Access to the park visitor center to the Independence Monument Overlook will be accessible from the west entrance of the monument.
