Free Kayak Instruction Program on Jamaica Bay

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Feb. 12, 2009. It is reproduced in full below.

This year the Gateway National Recreation Area, in conjunction with the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy, will offer a special program to introduce area residents to the joys of kayaking on Jamaica Bay. The program is free due to the generous support of the National Park Foundation and the Coca Cola Company.

The program will begin with indoor instruction at the Brooklyn Sports Club Pool in Spring Creek Towers. This indoor pool session will give beginners the chance to learn about kayaking and gain confidence with paddling in a safe and supervised environment. All equipment will be provided.

Beginning in June, an instructor will lead groups into the waters of Jamaica Bay to explore the area by kayak. The program is designed to give participants a fun experience on the bay, along with a shared sense of ownership and understanding of the waterways of the New York Estuary and Jamaica Bay.
